We are respectfully acknowledging that the lands on which we live and work at the Matawa Education and Care Centre are on the traditional lands of the Anishinabek Nation and the traditional territory of Fort William First Nation, signatory to the Robinson-Superior Treaty of 1850. We also want to acknowledge the communities of Matawa and the people in those communities who supported us in making this project, and what we are sharing with you today, to be successful and meaningful.
We, the Matawa Education and Care Centre and The Critical Thinking Consortium, would like to ensure that special acknowledgement is given to the following Cultural Workers, Knowledge Keepers and Elders who contributed their knowledge and understanding of the traditions and culture in the preparation of these learning materials. The resources on this site are only a small piece of the many and extensive Indigenous Teachings that are shared on Turtle Island. Teachings vary from First Nation to First Nation and even from one geographic region to another. We ensured that all materials and themes were intentionally inclusive towards Indigenous content in connection to Matawa communities and the practices specific to the way of Knowing on their lands. When using a lesson that does not originate in your geographic area, please respect, and celebrate the fact that traditions, protocols and cultures that are described in the lesson may differ where you live. You are welcome to use any of the lesson plans and videos while being cognizant of the distinct differences that exist among First Peoples. If you are a non-Indigenous educator, be mindful of the perspectives you may have and the impacts it can possess on the teaching, along with what you may not be comfortable in delivering yourself. If you wish to adapt a lesson in a respectful manner to suit your class, grade or group, you are welcome to do so. You, as an educator, are always encouraged to connect and invite the First Nations, Métis, or Inuit communities and organizations where you live into your learning space to learn about the diversity of cultures near you.
